Varicose veins affect millions of people, causing symptoms such as pain, burning, swelling, and heaviness of the leg. Patients often live with these symptoms for years while the condition continues to progress. In the past, treatment was costly and painful. However, new technology has allowed us to offer EVLT, or endovenous laser treatment, to patients without the problelms associated with older treatments.

EVLT is administered in our office under local anesthesia. There is no risk of general or spinal anesthesia. A laser fiber is inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance for added safety. This laser is then threaded up the vein to the proper location, again under the careful guidance of the ultrasound probe. Once it is in proper position, it is simply turned on and slowly withdrawn. The laser energy is transmitted to the vein wall, allowing the vein to close down and shut off flow to the varicose veins. The vein is checked after the procedure with ultrasound to ensure proper results.

Patients leave the office ambulating after a stocking or ace bandage is placed. They are encouraged to continue to ambulate once they are home. The procedure takes about an hour and is well-tolerated. There is minimal pain compared to the older treatments such as vein stripping.
